The Flying Cloud Academy Presents:

A Victorian Spring Dance Weekend

with Richard Powers!

Friday, March 22 to Sunday, March 24, 2024

Cincinnati, Ohio

Come join us as we dance out of the grays of winter and into the light and color of spring. We are delighted to host our founder, the celebrated Richard Powers, who will bring us a selection of 19th century dances that are especially playful, and even rowdy. No prior vintage dance experience is necessary, but some couple dance experience is recommended as basics will be reinforced but not necessarialy taught. On Saturday night, we will transform the Fine Arts Center ballroom into a Victorian garden and dance the night away to the music of Joyous Occations with precepting by Richard Powers.

Our Instructor and Band

Richard Powers

Richard Powers has been teaching historic and contemporary social dance for 45 years. He leads workshops around the world and is currently a full-time instructor in dance history and contemporary social dance forms at the Stanford University Dance Division, Department of Theater and Performance Studies.

His principal focus since 1975 has been social dance forms, from the Renaissance to today. Specializations include 19th century American and European social dance, dances of the Ragtime Era and Jazz Ages, and currently evolving vernacular dance forms.

His research is drawn from a personal collection of over 2,500 historic dance manuals, the largest personal collection in the world, supplemented with a twelve thousand-title collection of period dance music. Other resources include ongoing exchanges of information with dance historians in the U.S and Europe.

Joyous Occasions

The musicians of Joyous Occasions have played a wide variety of dance music for over twenty years. Based in Cincinnati, the quartet includes JoAnne DeGreg on piano, Kathy Woods on violin, Astrid Mast on flute, and Doug Mast on accordion and mandolin. Our repertoire of period-appropriate tunes ranges from the late 18 th to early 20 th century, adding to the atmosphere of period balls, dances, and other events.
