2017 35th Anniversary Vintage Dance Week

July 16 – 21, 2017

This summer (July 16 - July 22, 2017), dancers from across the country and around the world will return to Cincinnati to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the very first vintage dance week. The original dance week focused on the social dances of the 19th and 20th centuries and was hosted by Richard Powers and his Flying Cloud Academy of Vintage Dance.

The 2017 Vintage Dance Week will also emphasize the dances of the 19th and 20th centuries.  Well-respected instructors, including Richard Powers, Joan Walton, Joel Plys, Margarita Marambio, Merrell Fuson and Dmitry Khan, will teach daily dance classes.  Seminars and field trips on historic dance, costuming, vintage clothing, period deportment, dance research and music will fill out the daytime hours.  Each day will include a dance or ball.  They are:

Sunday Evening:  Informal Welcome Dance at Xavier University, music by Joyous Occasions and  Richard Powers

Monday Evening:  Regency/English Country Ball at Drees Pavilion in Devou Park, music by BLT

Tuesday Evening:  Ragtime Romp in the Oak Room of the Cincinnati Club, music by BLT

Wednesday Afternoon:  Bal Blanc Tea Dance at French House in French Park, Amberley, music by BLT

Thursday Evening:  Mid to late 19th Century Grand Ball in the Hall of Mirrors of the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, music by BLT

Friday Evening:  Jazz-age/Swing Ball at the newly renovated Memorial Hall, music by Swingtime Big Band

Cincinnati is the ideal setting for this Vintage Dance celebration.  In 1850, this Germanesque river town was the cultural capital of the American West.  Much of the nineteenth century building stock remains intact making it a popular filming location for more and more movie directors.  Along with New Orleans, St. Louis and Memphis, Cincinnati helped birth two unique American music forms – ragtime and jazz.  Feel the beat as you walk down the streets in our historic neighborhoods.

Classes, dining services, and housing (optional) will be located on the campus of Xavier University, which is located 10 minutes from downtown Cincinnati.

Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 90 people, gender balanced.  In order to maintain a gender balance, we are only accepting registrations for the full week for single gentlemen or couples.   Please fill out one form per person.

To be confirmed, we must receive your deposit via PayPal, credit card, or check within 7 days of your registration. We must be able to match you with another person dancing the opposite lead/follow role, so we encourage you to specify a partner on your registration form. If you do not specify a partner, we will put you on a waiting list and match you with a dancer of the opposite gender/role in order of registration. We will notify you when we confirm your registration.

The tuition of $1095 ($495 for full-time students) for the week includes:

  • All dance workshops and seminars
  • Admission to all balls and events Sunday through Friday
  • All breakfasts, lunches, and dinners Sunday evening through Saturday breakfast
  • Transportation, courtesy of local dancers, to events

Not included in tuition:

  • Housing (you may choose to stay on campus, or make separate arrangements)
  • Optional Saturday boat cruise
  • Transportation to and from your home

Register for the dance week with a deposit of $200.  Registration may be cancelled up to May 1, 2017 for a full refund of your deposit.  After that, the deposit is non-refundable unless there is an applicant on the waiting list who is able to take your spot.  We will accept reservations until June 1, 2017. The final payment is due when you check in on Sunday, July 16, 2017.

Resources

Food

All food is included in the price of the full week tuition.  Most food will be provided at Xavier University’s “food court” style dining hall.  The food is of high quality and the large selection provides options for all dietary needs.

Housing

We recommend the convenient, air-conditioned housing offered on Xavier’s campus.  Dorms are a 5 – 8 minute walk from the workshop locations.   Fenwick Place offers suite style living.  Most include 3 or 4 bedrooms in each suite, two bathrooms, an outer sink and a living space.   Kuhlman Hall (recently renovated) is a more traditional suite style where two rooms are connected by a shared bathroom, meaning that between 2 and 4 people share a common bathroom.  Linens will be provided.  Please note that we will make every attempt to accommodate your housing preference, which will be granted in the order that the registration is received.

River Boat Cruise, Dance Week Optional add-on

Board the beautiful River Queen for a Captain’s Lunch Cruise on Saturday, July 22.  We have reserved an entire floor just for us with live music provided by Joyous Occasions.  We board at 11:00 am, sail at 12:00 pm and dock at 2:00 pm.  Cruise includes the “Sternwheeler Lunch Buffet.”
