Dances

The Flying Cloud performs historical ballroom dances from six different periods from the early 1800s through the 1930s. Those periods are listed below.  We intersperse dances with anecdotes relating to period etiquette, dance and music history

Regency
Discover the skipping steps and playful melodies of the Contradance, Minuet, Quadrille, and Reel danced by the characters in the novels of Jane Austen in the early 1800s

Victorian
Return to the Civil War ballroom of Scarlett O’Hara with the spirited Polka, majestic Polonaise, stately Schottische, exuberant Mazurka, and graceful Waltz.

Late Victorian
Marvel at the intricate steps of the fleeting Redowa, animated Two Step, Cakewalk, and whirling Viennese Waltz of the late nineteenth century.

Ragtime
Strut to the syncopated rhythms of the strains of America’s jazz in the early 1900s that produced the unique Half and Half, exotic Maxixe, lively One Step, and sultry Tango.

Jazz
Relive the days of the Flapper Era from the sensuous Tango and the sultry Blues to the dances of the Prohibition Era including the Charleston, the Foxtrot, and the Lindy Hop.

1930s
Enjoy the dances of the Great Depression including the most popular Lindy Hop, as well as the Big Apple, the Shim Sham, the elegant Foxtrot and the Cross-step Waltz.
