Flying Cloud Academy’s
40th Anniversary
Vintage Dance Celebration

June 12-18, 2022

This summer (June 12 to June 18, 2022), dancers from across the country and around the world will return to Cincinnati to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the founding of The Flying Cloud Academy. This celebration, the 2022 Vintage Dance Week, will highlight the dances of the 19th and early 20th centuries.  Classes will be offered at all levels from beginner to advanced and will be taught by a variety of respected and seasoned instructors, including Richard Powers, Joan Walton, Nick & Melissa Enge, Jeanette Watts, Tim Lamm, Martha Griffin, Alan Duffy and Erich Gansmuller. Seminars and field trips on historic dance, costuming, vintage clothing, dance research and music will round out the offerings.  Each day will include a dance or ball:

Sunday Evening:  Informal Welcome Dance at Northern Kentucky University, with an eclectic assortment of recorded music

Monday Evening:  Regency/English Country Ball at Drees Pavilion in Devou Park, with music by Keltricity and prompting by Merrell Fuson

Tuesday Evening:  Ragtime Romp at The Phoenix in downtown Cincinnati, with music by The New Liberty Dance Orchestra led by Matt Tolentino

Wednesday Afternoon:  Bal Blanc Tea Dance at the Peterloon Estate in Indian Hill, with music by The New Liberty Dance Orchestra

Thursday Evening:  Mid to late 19th Century Grand Ball in the Hall of Mirrors of the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, with music by The Fleeting Moments Waltz & Quickstep Orchestra led by Doug Bruestle

Friday Evening:  Jazz-age/Swing Ball at the Cincinnati Museum Center’s Lousantiville Café, with music by The New Liberty Dance Orchestra

Cincinnati is the ideal setting for this Vintage Dance celebration.  In 1850, this Germanesque river town was the cultural capital of the American West.  Much of the nineteenth century building stock remains intact making it a popular filming location for many movie directors.  Along with New Orleans, St. Louis and Memphis, Cincinnati helped birth two unique American music forms – ragtime and jazz.

Classes, dining services, and housing (optional) will be located on the campus of Northern Kentucky University (NKU), which is located 10 minutes south of downtown Cincinnati.

Food and Housing

All food is included in the price of the tuition.  Most food will be provided at NKU’s “food court” style dining hall. All dietary needs can be accommodated.

We recommend the convenient, air-conditioned housing offered on NKU’s campus which is a 5 minute walk from most workshop locations.   The new residence hall offers suite style living with private bedrooms that share living spaces and bathrooms. Housing may also be arranged independently.

Cincinnati Dinner Train (Optional Add-on)

Step back to the simpler and less complex times of the 1940s with dinner and a ride on the Cincinnati Dinner Train! There's nothing like dining on white table clothed tables while watching the scenery and sights slowly go by as your dining car gently meanders down the track. We will board the train on Saturday, June 18, at 5:00 pm, depart promptly at 6:00 pm and will return approximately at 9:00 pm. NOTE: This excursion is very popular, so we must make our group reservation on MARCH 1. We will only be able to reserve seats for those reservations that are paid in full. Cost for this optional event is $50.00, which is being underwritten by The Flying Cloud Academy. The $50.00 payment will include taxes and gratuity.
